Letters are believed to be dated 1877. It is interesting to note that in one of the letters, Tenney makes reference to "many of my portraits have been carried away to avoid risk from fire." In 1872, during the Great Boston Fire, many artists suffered losses of their works in the fire, particularly William Morris Hunt who's gallery was consumed by the fire.
Mr. Tenney was "one of the foremost nineteenth century portrait painters of New Hampshire, was born in Hanover and died in Portsmouth. He studied first with his uncle, portrait painter Adna Tenney, then with Roswell T. Smith of Hanover and Francis Alexander, a leading portraitist of Boston. During his career, he taught a number of students himself in addition to painting, by his own account, nearly 1,000 portraits." From Judith Vance, appraiser from New Hampshire.
