Major William Congreve was married to Lady Pepperell-Congreve, the great-granddaughter of Sir William Pepperell, Bart. ,the “hero of Louisbourg, Cape Breton”. He was simply William Pepperell of Kittery when in 1745 he took command of the forces at the Siege of Louisbourg.

Louisbourg was a French fort established to protect French commercial fishing interests in the area of Ile Royale, now known as Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia.
