Hardcover picture book, first edition, Pyxidium Press; printed glossy hardcover (no jacket). Covers scuffed. Scarce. Baronio, Joyce. 42nd Street Studio. Pyxidium Press, 1980. This first 1980 edition of Joyce Baronio’s photographic portfolio 42nd Street Studio offers an important historical record of New York City’s notoriously seedy but fading 42nd Street red light district in the late 1970s. Self-published by Baronio under her own Pyxidium Press imprint when she was just twenty years old, the book features 38 gritty black and white photographs taken inside grungy Times Square peep shows, strip clubs, and adult video stores, as well as their eccentric patrons and performers. Though small in scale, 42nd Street Studio represents a daring early achievement for fine art photographer Joyce Baronio andcaptures a vanished NYC era on the cusp of major urban renewal efforts in the 1980s.
