The Spell of the Hawaiian Islands and the Philippines (The Page Company, Boston)
by Isabel Anderson
Isabel Anderson (1876-1948) was an American author, philanthropist, and socialite. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Isabel Weld Perkins and Commodore George Hamilton Perkins. She married diplomat Larz Anderson III in 1897, which enabled her extensive international travels.
Anderson wrote numerous travelogues and books about her experiences in different countries. This book focuses on the Hawaiian Islands and the Philippines, which were U.S. territories at the time. It provides an account of the historical and political conditions of these Pacific possessions, along with descriptions of their natural beauty and the customs of their peoples.
As the wife of a diplomat, Anderson often had unique access to people and places, which she shared through her writing. Her books typically combined personal anecdotes with historical and cultural information, providing American readers with insights into foreign cultures during a time when international travel was less common.
Anderson authored several books in her "Spell of" series, including "The Spell of Japan" and "The Spell of Belgium," as mentioned in the title page.
