Item Description

THIS IS CALIFORNIA Karl Obert Published by Lane Publishing Co., Menlo Park, CA, 1957. Classic photo book, blue cloth, uncommon with dj. First edition. Jacket rough, torn, under Mylar; first blank leaf lacking. Obert, Karl. This Is California. Lane Publishing Co., 1957. German-born photographer Karl Obert immigrated to California in the late 1920s, having honed his craft capturing European landscapes before World War I upended his career plans. Though he quickly established himself as a leading architectural and scenic photographer on the South Coast and beyond, the Depression and WWII interfered with publishing his grand pictorial survey of California’s natural beauty and development. Finally released by Lane Publishing in booming 1957, This Is California epitomized the postwar California Dream for new generations of families settling the West, portraying idyllic orange groves, beaches, Sierra Nevada mountain resorts and cities from San Francisco to new suburbia. Though omitting struggles of marginalized groups, Obert’s bright visions of prosperity and recreation propagated alluring portrayals of endless opportunity just as aerospace and other industries were spurring mass migration to the Golden State.
