Item Description

During the late 1940s and early 1950s, the U.S. Air Force Air Rescue Service, a division of the Military Air Transport Service, consisted of 54 unites worldwide. It was organized into numbered Air Rescue Squadrons (ARS), each with a headquarters and four Flights lettered “A”, “B”, “C”, and “D”. Normally, headquarters and Flight “A” were co-located while the other flights were detached. Some of these squadrons and their areas of operations were: The 3rd ARS – the Far East; the 10th – Alaska; the 1st – Florida and the Caribbean; and the 5th in the western U.S. The 7th ARS had headquarters and Flight “A” in Wiesbaden, Germany. Flight “B” was stationed in the Azores, Flights “C” at Wheelus AB, Tripoli, and Flight “D” about as far away from the United States as one could get without starting back, at Dhahran Air Field, Saudi Arabia. I was a member of this flight from January 1950 through March, 1951, as a Staff Sergeant Aircraft Crew Chief and Flight Mechanic on SB-17Gs and SA-16As.

Today, Dhahran is quite a modern Arabian center with a first class airfield, but in 1950-1951 it was a small, almost Beau Gueste outpost, with Quonset huts and tents, a few stone buildings and a couple of runways instead of a legionnaire fortress. The 1414th Air Base Group, MATS, operated Dhahran Air Field and during most of my 15 month tour, Flight “D” was the only tactical unit assigned. Flight “D” was only half the normal size of a Rescue Flight. We had two lifeboat-carrying SB-17G aircraft and one H-5H helicopter mounted on floats. The SB-17Gs were replaced in the summer of 1950 with the first two SA-16A aircraft assigned to an overseas unit. Another vital Flight 'D' mission wag the operation of a Land Rescue component with two 6x6, 4-ton 'Diamond T' trucks and a 4x4 Dodge ambulance specialty adapted for desert travel. There were 11 officers and 30 enlisted personnel assigned to Flight -D-. There were only 225 U.S. military personnel assigned to the base.
