George William Cox was a British historian born on January 10, 1827, in Benares, and he passed away on February 10, 1902, in Walmer. He is best known for his work in the field of mythography, where he analyzed and interpreted myths from ancient Greece and other cultures. Cox proposed that many myths were not just stories but were actually symbolic representations of natural phenomena, particularly those related to the sun. This means he believed that various characters and events in these myths symbolized the movements and characteristics of the sun and its influence on the natural world. His work contributed to the understanding of mythology as a way ancient peoples explained and idealized the forces of nature, especially solar activities.
