LITHOGRAPHS OF N. CURRIER AND CURRIER & IVES , By Warren A. Weaver , Holborn Pub. Co.
New York , copyright 1925 , 1st Ed. , history , chronology , alphabetical list and price guide.
Currier & Ives produced over 7,500 different lithographs during their career, depicting a wide range of American political, social, and cultural themes.
They were best known for their colorful and detailed lithographic prints documenting everyday life in 19th century America. Common subjects included landscapes, sporting scenes, ships, trains, and moralistic images.
The firm dominated the American lithography scene from the 1840s to the 1880s, mass producing their prints using the latest technologies. This allowed them to make their prints widely available to the public.
Currier's early career focused on urban scenes, disasters, and news events. After partnering with Ives, Currier & Ives transitioned to idealized rural scenes and romantic visions of country life as the market demand shifted.
The enormous popularity of Currier & Ives prints made them iconic representations of late 19th century American history and culture. Their lithographs remain highly collectible today as valuable Americana artifacts from this period.
