Item Description

Spiral binding, VG (covers lightly scuffed). A remarkable time capsule and historic artifact enhanced by the inclusion of work by a number of America's leading photographers, not the least being a young-ish George Platt Lynes (1907-1955), the legendary Gay photographer, whose 4 full-page b/w images of the male form in Glenway Wescott's essay "Illustrations of Mythology" epitomize a Queer aesthetic, informing how a reader might then view other pictures in the magazine, such as Outerbridge's Ethiopian Form, the modern dancers, a cowboy leaning against a fence, Boulder Dam construction worker, and, in some sense, a factory smokestack and the World's Fair's iconic Trylon & Perisphere. [Reference, "A 1939 feature in US Camera illustrates Lynes’s complicated attachment to the
legacy of the male nude. " Baynes, Thomas D., "More than a Spasm, Less than a Sign: Queer Masculinity in American Visual Culture, 1915-1955" (2019). ]
