Helmut Gernsheim, Lewis Carroll, Photographer (New York: Chanticleer Press, 1950). Hardcover no dj. Good condition, light toning. Helmut Gernsheim’s comprehensive Lewis Carroll, Photographer rescues the photographic achievements of Lewis Carroll - otherwise known as Charles Lutwidge Dodgson - from obscurity. Though best known today as the author of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Dodgson was also an avid and accomplished 19th century fine art photographer, using the medium to capture portraits and tableaux of young girls with a pre-Raphaelite aesthetic. Despite making over 3,000 images, Dodgson's photographs were little known prior to Gernsheim's landmark book. Bringing long overdue attention to the work, Lewis Carroll, Photographer established Dodgson as an important figure in the early history of photography.
