Item Description

"English Spelling-Book" by William Mavor, LL.D., is accompanied by a progressive series of easy and familiar lessons. The book is illustrated by Kate Greenaway, engraved and printed by Edmund Evans, and includes a frontispiece. It was published by George Routledge and Sons at Broadway, Ludgate Hill, London, and 9 Lafayette Place, New York.

Kate Greenaway, born in London in 1846, was a distinguished English illustrator known for her charming and nostalgic depictions of children. Raised in a creative household, her father was an engraver, and her mother was a milliner, influences that shaped her artistic style. Greenaway attended the South Kensington School and the Slade School of Fine Art, where she honed her unique watercolor techniques. Her career breakthrough came in 1879 with "Under the Window," which showcased her idyllic illustrations of children in Regency-era clothing. Greenaway collaborated extensively with printer Edmund Evans, contributing to books, greeting cards, and almanacs. Despite facing comparisons with male contemporaries, she remained a pivotal figure in Victorian visual culture until her death in 1901
