First edition, first issue. BAL 7621; Clark 23.3a. Frazer Clark's bibliography charts several plate variants and makes clear the distinctions between a number of early (1860) printings.
Hawthorne's last novel (died 1864) and the only major work completed while he lived abroad as a foreign appointee of President Franklin Pierce. The great romance in its very earliest state.
Bowing to critical pressure, Hawthorne added a "Conclusion to the Second Edition (Fourth Printing), to make the plot resolution more coherent. A handsome set in original binding with only lightest wear to spine tips, boards unblemished, text unmarked, sewing tight, gilt still bright
