The Bells / Les Cloches, Edgar Poe, translated by J.D., numbered edition limited to 25 copies, No. 000002.
Inscribed by the author "Au docteur Ullmann, admirateur de Poe, hommage confraternel."
Translation: "To Doctor Ullmann, admirer of Poe, fraternal homage."
Dr. Marcel Ullmann, a 32-year-old Jewish doctor, was involved in the French Resistance during World War II. He notably participated in the activities of the Resistance hospital in the Vercors region, initially located in Saint-Martin-en-Vercors.
As German forces advanced, the hospital was relocated to the Grotte de la Luire. On July 27, 1944, this makeshift hospital was discovered by German troops, leading to the execution of many wounded patients and medical staff. Dr. Ullmann was captured during this event.
Later, during the night of August 10–11, 1944, at the Polygone of Grenoble, he was executed by firing squad alongside Dr. Fischer and the chaplain, Father Yves Moreau de Montcheuil.
