Item Description

(NEW YORK / NEWPORT SOCIETY) Hamilton Fish Webster's bookplate and handwritten gift presentation from his great grandmother. Hamilton Fish Webster (1861-1939), born in New York city, was the only child of Sidney Webster and Sarah Morris Fish, daughter of Hamilton Fish, prominent New York Statesman and Cabinet member. Hamilton Webster graduated from Columbia in 1883 and in 1891 married Lina Post. After spending many summers in Newport, he became a legal resident in 1901, living at "Pen Craig" (since demolished). Long active in Newport civic affairs, he was a stockholder of the Newport Casino, one of the founders of the Seaman's Church Institute, and one of the directors of the Redwood Library for many years. He died in Newport 26 September 1939. He was a first cousin once removed of Hamilton Fish Kean, who donated his portrait to the Redwood Library. Hamilton Webster was also an avid book collector, who amassed a large and valuable library of rare and historical books, manuscripts, and maps, especially relating to American history and the colonial period.
