Item Description

first edition hardcover includes original dust jacket art and 90 black and white photographic plates printed in gravure. Some light wear to dust jacket edges, toning to endpapers; interior clean. Magubane was arrested and spent an extended period in solitary confinement. His photographs from the 1960s and 1970s amount to an important archive documenting a painful period in South Africa's history. "Black Child" contains images made by Magubane under threat of harassment, house searches, and arrest, providing raw evidence of the trauma of the apartheid system--a poetic and poignant pictorial essay focusing on the children raised under apartheid.
