Writing to a disabled colleague on illustrated House letterhead during the Civil War, discussing an unpublished article for Atlas newspaper and commenting on Democratic Party politics: "The democratic party is alive, but your humble servant was heated d--d badly by it at the last election." The letter shows both personal concern for his correspondent's health and candid political commentary during a crucial period of the Civil War.
