Picturing Paradise: Colonial Photography Of Samoa, 1875 to 1925 - Softcover. 1995. Picturing Paradise is a 1995 photographic history by Peter J. Hempenstall and Noel Rutherford documenting colonial rule in Western Samoa spanning 1875 to 1925. The book compiles images captured by colonial administrators, merchants and visiting Western photographers, offering many rare scenes of indigenous Samoans alongside churches, schools, hospitals, plantations and other sites representing the attempted “civilizing mission” of Western powers. The volume provides visual insight into a transformative and traumatic period for Samoa, while also examining the practices and biases inherent in colonial image-making in the South Pacific.
