This was the beginning of the Designer age of modern lighting and the European influence on American lighting. Architect and designer, Louis Kalff was the art director for commercials, products, exhibitions, and stands for N.V. Philips (and Philips Lighting). Contacting Philips, he proclaimed that the company’s advertising was not modern enough and did not have enough allure. Kalff argued that he wanted to normalize the Philips word mark and emphasized the unity and international aspect of their corporate communications. He was put in charge of the commercial and artistic propaganda departments and he led the Lichtadviesbureau (‘Lighting Advice Bureau’) and was appointed art director in 1946 . His lighting designs were renowned and copied throughout the world.
One of the classic design forms of Louis Kalffr, the shade is a little bent out of round. It measures about 17" high. Shade measures about 12" in diameter.
