– All original, except for the mats used when they were re-framed back in their original frames. This most likely is a result of the desire to have acid free mats or perhaps the original mats had damage. Further, glass points were used instead of the original or at least duplicate nails.
– The original mats were oval – explanation and further details follow. The person that re-framed the pictures most likely did not want to deal with creating oval opening mats. Further, pre-cut mats are readily available that fit these frames in a square or rectangular format while oval cut mats are not so easily found.
- I did not remove the backs and was unable to determine if an acid free paper or separator was used between the photo and the wood backing.
- As stated on the original back labels, these are “Silver Prints” or more accurately, Gelatin Silver Developing-Out Paper Process prints. This printing process was invented in 1873 and became the paper photographic process of choice by 1895.
- Depending on the specific process procedure followed, the resulting prints could end up duplicate in appearance, tintype photographs.
- Since a full plate tintype is approximately 6 ½” x 8 ½”, considerably smaller than the typical frames used for wall hanging photographs, they were typically set in oval mats, cut to accommodate the picture and the frame.
- Tintype photography was more costly than the “Silver Print” process. Therefore, to fully make Silver Prints appear to be the more expensive tintypes, oval matting was typically used, which can be detected as being the original mats used with these pictures by closely inspecting the photographs.
Condition is subject to personal opinion. We believe the condition to be very good. However, please study the pictures in detail to make your own determination.
