Archive Photo Lot of Fifty 1983 IRT R62 BROOKLYN DOCK LAUNCH
50+ 8" x 10" Original black & white images, all stamped on verso "SUPPORT DERVICES R.T...."
The R62 subway cars, which were introduced to the New York City Subway system in 1983, marked a significant development in the history of subway transportation in the city. These cars played a vital role in enhancing the subway experience for passengers, particularly those traveling on the Brooklyn-bound IRT (Interborough Rapid Transit) lines.
The introduction of the R62 cars was part of the New York City Transit Authority's (now part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, or MTA) ongoing efforts to modernize and upgrade the subway system, which had been plagued by decades of neglect and underinvestment.
The R62 cars were initially deployed on the IRT Lexington Avenue Line (4, 5, and 6 trains). However, they eventually found their way onto the IRT Brooklyn Line (2 and 3 trains), serving Brooklyn residents and commuters.
The introduction of the R62 cars in Brooklyn marked a positive change for passengers. The air-conditioned cars offered relief from the hot and stuffy subway platforms during the sweltering New York summers.
