Item Description

Volume 1, published in 1818, comprises the first American edition of Franklin's Autobiography as written by Franklin and the first American printing of the third part in any form. John Brandegee’s copy, his name penned in some volumes

Volume 1 dated 1818, with copyright label pasted on verso of printed title page, Vol. 2 dated 1809, Vol. 3 dated 1808 (on electricity), Vol. 4 dated 1809 (includes the article “Plan for improving the condition of the free Blacks, 1789,” Page 248, Vol. 5 dated 1809, Diplomatic Secret Correspondence, Vol. 6, engraved title page dated 1809 but printed title page dated 1817.
All original full calf in various good to better condition, all covers attached, all with engraved titles and apparently complete of the portraits and illustrations. All endpapers are a pleasing brown Sturmont design typical of the period.
A John Brandegee was a cotton broker in New Orleans who moved to New London to be part of the whaling industry.
