"Marmion; A Tale of Flodden Field" is a narrative poem written by Sir Walter Scott. Printed in Edinburgh in 1808 by James Ballantyne and Co., the poem tells the story of Lord Marmion, a fictional character caught in political intrigue and love, set against the backdrop of the Battle of Flodden Field in 1513. The quotation at the beginning expresses lamentation that a Scottish poet and maid would sing and recount a battle where their countrymen fell to their enemies. Published by Archibald Constable & Company in Edinburgh, and William Miller and John Murray in London, the poem reflects Scott's talent for weaving historical events with romantic narrative, cementing his reputation as a master storyteller during the Romantic era in literature.
