Robert Wyland, known simply as “Wyland,” is an American artist and environmental activist best known for painting large public murals of whales and other ocean life.
A mother humpback lifting its newborn calf to the surface for its first breath has become a signature theme for marine life artist Wyland. In this epic painting, the moment is accompanied by shimmering sunlight filtering through the cool sea. “People everywhere can relate to this image,” Wyland says. “It’s a celebration of nature and life, and reminds us that all creatures, even ones as majestic as the great whales – depend on their mothers for survival.
