NM Lot Of 2 Large 1940s Tintogravures By PALENSKE - INFAMOUS RACE HORSE SEA BISQUIT & ARISTIDES

This litho was done by famous artist Palenske of SEA BISQUIT who was one of the fastest race horses ever and in 1938 beat the then famous unbeatable war admiral

R.H. Palenske – Sea Biscuit
Attention of all horse racing enthusiasts focused on the track at Pimlico that November day in 1938 as the two greatest thoroughbreds then running lined up at the post for the “race of the decade”. Mighty War Admiral, fast starting son of Man O’ War, was a heavy favorite over the “come-from-behind” specialist from western tracks, Seabiscuit. A small bay stallion, the underdog Seabiscuit startled the racing world that day by galloping under the wire to win by four lengths, set a new track record and established himself as the best thoroughbred in the country.
Sired by Hard Tack out of Swing On, Seabiscuit was foaled May 23, 1933. In his third year on the turf he won a phenomenal 11 wins in 15 starts. Retiring in 1940 after six years of racing, he established a record of 33 wins in 89 starts for record-breaking total winnings of $437,730. He died of a heart ailment in 1947.
R.H. Palenske, one of America’s foremost sporting artists, made this etching of Seabiscuit and the seven colts he sired while temporarily retired in 1939 because of an injury. One of Palenske’s finest plates, “Seabiscuit” is reproduced in exclusive Talio-Crome and may be framed to best advantage in a natural or blond wood moulding with a black line.

R.H. Palenske – Aristides, Kentucky Derby

Oldest stakes race in America to be run annually without lapse since its inception, the Kentucky Derby is one of the world’s best-known racing events – and one of the richest. Winner’s purse in recent years is nearly $100,000. Aristides, for his race in 1875, won his owner a net of $2,850. But more important to horse owners today is the honor of winning the Derby, crowning achievement for a three-year-old thoroughbred.
R.H. Palenske, prominent American etcher, has been an ardent horse lover most of his life and many of his best plates are portraits of famous thoroughbreds. One of his finest works, “Aristides” is reproduced in exclusive Talio-Crome to retain all the fine detail of the original. Mr. Palenske suggests a frame of blond or natural wood moulding with a black line.
