Cusenier was one of the leaders in the large liqueur market before the First World War. Though tastes have changed, and people today no longer enjoy overly sweet but strong fruit cordials (such as the peach brandy advertised here), the company still exists. While this image is replete with the erotic kitsch that was a hallmark of the artist's work, it is curiously more aggressive than usual for Pal. This "nice girl" is pouring a glass of peach brandy for a concupiscent Pierrot, who would have been immediately identifiable: In 1898, Francisco Tamagno designed a Pierrot as the mascot for Cointreau, one of Cusenier's major competitors. A year or two later, Pal was simultaneously tipping his cap to his fellow poster artist's ingenious success, and at the same time stealing his thunder
