John Anthony was educated at the Academia delle Belle Arti in Rome, and the Fashion Institute of Technology. In 1971, after spending nine years designing at Devonbrook (1959-68), and three years working for Adolphe Zelinka (1968-70), he opened his own house, partnering with Robert Levine. He had high-profile clients like the wives of U.S. presidents, including Betty Ford, Rosalynn Carter, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, as well as many actresses and performers. His style won him the designer Coty award.
