The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, by Charles Dickens, published in complete form in 1837 has the distinction of being Dickens' first novel. The Pickwick Papers are actually a collection of humorous stories which were to have occurred over the years 1827-1828. Samuel Pickwick, Esquire, leads the "Pickwick Club". Samuel suggests he and three other "Pickwickians" make adventures from London to the English countryside to explore the curious and unique aspects of life and report back on their experiences. The laughs increase when Samuel is joined by the Cockney Sam Weller as his personal assistant and companion.
