This letter dated July 24, 1812 from French Mills to Major General Benjamin Mooers is from captain Rufus Tilden(Franklin County). The letter begins

(A chief from the tribe of the St.Regis Indians Known by Abolition as Col. Lewis)

It goes on and asking for guidance and refuge for the Indians protection from the difficulties at hand. The letter is signed in the bottom right corner Rufus Tilden commanding at the French Mills.
