TJDGs research notes:
In the early 20th century, there were prevalent attitudes of discrimination and insensitivity in the United States and Europe, which sometimes found expression in art and collectibles. This mechanical bank, known as the ‘Dinah’ bank, is a historical artifact that serves as a reminder of those times.
Manufactured in England between 1911 and 1925, the ‘Dinah’ mechanical bank showcases intricate craftsmanship and vibrant colors. It features a figure wearing a yellow dress, with various elements painted in different colors. The bank operates by placing a coin in its hand and pressing a lever, causing the coin to be deposited into the mouth.
While it’s important to acknowledge the historical context in which this bank was created, we must also recognize that such depictions are insensitive and offensive by today’s standards. We appreciate the craftsmanship and historical significance of this collectible without endorsing or promoting the stereotypes it may represent.
