Thank you so much for responding to my email about my Great Uncle! And thank you too, for adding him to the list of Navy personnel buried at Arlington.
I know that when he saved the Phoenix at Pearl Harbor he was the navigator aboard and not yet a Captain, and that the Captain was ashore. I think it was the only ship saved that terrible day. When he was killed, in 1945, he was not on his own ship. According to my mother, he had left his ship to be with his men aboard the U.S.S. Terror.
His brother, Augustus Dayton Clark, was also a Captain in the Navy, both had attended Annapolis. Dayton was in the Atlantic th eater and was in charge of the Force Mulberry at Omaha Beach. I never met my great uncle Bob, but Dayton was my families total hero. Thanks again.
Ann Emerson, December 2006
