Item Description

Antique Japanese 19th Century Tomokazu Wood Carvings Signed Netsuke

Originating from the Edo period (1615-1868), specifically from the 19th century, this netsuke presents an impeccable representation of the artistic prowess of the era. Meticulously crafted, it portrays three rats climbing over each other, capturing a moment of movement and interaction in the animal kingdom. This piece, carved from wood, encapsulates the delicate attention to detail and the profound understanding of nature’s intricacies that characterized the work of artisans during the Edo period.

One of the most striking features of this netsuke is the inlaid dark horn that forms the eyes of the rats. These dark, glistening eyes add depth and realism to the composition, ensuring that the viewer’s attention is immediately drawn to them. The contrast between the wood’s warm tones and the dark horn inlays highlights the intricate craftsmanship and thoughtful design that went into this piece.

To further solidify its authenticity and origin, the netsuke is signed on a rectangular reserve with rounded ends by its creator, Tomokazu. Active during the 19th century, Tomokazu’s signature adds not just value but a touch of history to the piece, allowing us a glimpse into the world of traditional Japanese art and the master craftsmen who brought such exquisite works to life.

This wood netsuke, with its intricate design and historical significance, is a testament to the artistic excellence of the Edo period. It’s not just a piece of art, but a slice of history, representing the cultural and artistic zenith of 19th-century Japan.

Notes: Spotting around top. Looks like can be wiped. Please refer to photos.
