Navajo Sand paintings - These are partial depictions of the intricate sand paintings created by a medicineman to help cure an affliction of the body and/or mind. The figures represent human, animal and plant figures which are pertinent to the Navajo way of life. The most common figures are the male (round head) and female (square head) yei figures. There are four sacred plants; squash, corn, bean and tobacco. The four cardinal direct ions are represented by the colors white, black, blue and yellow. Actual sand paintings which are created on the ground must be destroyed each day at sundown and recreated again.
