Item Description

Anno 1219 Bronze Box - Copenhagen Iron Art - The Battle Of Lyndanisse
Measures 7.75"L x 4"D x 3.5"H

Bronze iron art casket/jewelry box from Denmark commemorating the 1219 Danish victory at the Battle of Lyndanisse. The piece is deeply embossed with scenes of the Danish Bishop Sunesan in 1219 at the battle of Lyndanisse. The box is lined in fine grained wood. It measures 3.5 inches (9 cm) wide, 7.5 inches (19.5 cm) long, and 3.5 inches (9 cm) high. It is stamped on the rear side "Iron Art, Copenhagen,Denmark". The piece is in very good condition with no dents, in keeping with its age.The Teutonic Knights had been attempting to Christianize the eastern Baltic region, but by 1219 they had to turn to the Danish king Valdemar for help. Pope Honorius III declared King Valdemar's invasion of Estonia into a crusade. Valdemar raised an army and gathered all of Denmark's ships, 1500 in number, to transport the army to the Baltic state of Estonia. When the army landed in Estonia, near modern-day Tallinn, the Estonian chiefs met with the Danes and agreed to acknowledge the Danish king as their overlord. As a token of faith, some of the Estonians accepted baptism. Three days later on 15 June 1219 while the Danes were attending mass, thousands of Estonians attacked the Danish camp from all sides. Confusion reigned and Valdemar's crusade was endangered. Vitslav of RĂ¼gen gathered his men and attacked the Estonians from the rear. During the Battle of Lyndanisse the legend says that whenever Bishop Sunesen raised his arms the Danes surged forward and when his arms grew tired and he lowered them, the Estonians turned the Danes back. The Bishop's attendants assisted him to raise his arms again and the Danes surged forward again. At the height of the battle Bishop Sunsen prayed for a sign and a red cloth with a white cross drifted down from the sky just as the Danes began to fall back. A voice, presumably God's, was heard to say "When this banner is raised on high, you shall be victorious!" The Danes surged forward and won the battle. At the end of the day thousands of Estonians were dead on the field, and Estonia was added to the Danish realm. The red banner with a white cross (Dannebrog) has been the national flag of the Danes since 1219. Dannebrog is Europe's oldest flag design still in modern use.
