* * Artist Info * * Louis Berenberg (1955 – 1996)
Born in Boston, MA, Louis was an artist and an adult drawing instructor at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA; Danforth Art Museum and Art School in Framingham, MA (where he also taught sculpture); Fuller Museum of Art School in Brockton, MA; and the Newton Arts Center in Newton, MA.
His work was exhibited at numerous galleries and museums, including the Danforth Museum; the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield, MA; the Mills Gallery in Boston; the Clark Gallery in Lincoln, MA; the Fuller Museum of Art; the Newton Arts Center; the Starr Gallery in Newton, MA; the Grossman Gallery in the School of the Museum of Fine Arts; the Project Community Arts Center in Cambridge, MA; and the Boston Visual Artist Union Gallery in Boston.
Louis began his career as a sculptor after graduating with a BFA from Tufts University in 1978 and a diploma from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in 1979. He soon felt the medium of stone and wood was too confining to communicate his overriding interest in the effect of man on nature. Louis turned to drawing with pastels, covering large surfaces with rich dark landscapes accented with bright objects.
“The images in my pastel drawings comment on the relationship between natural environments and man-made ones. The landscapes we make are often manicured lawns and carefully sculpted shrubs, no longer in their natural forms. The presence of a lawn chair in a yard or the juxtaposition of interior to exterior on a back porch suggests our need to be one with our natural world while paradoxically altering it. The results can be both dissonant and harmonious.”
