19TH CENTRY ANTIQUE CAST IRON APOTHECARY CORK PRESS COUNTER MOUNT TYPE

Measures 10" x 3.25" x 3", cast iron retaining a decent amount of its original black japanning, scrolls and acanthus leaf ornamentation, This counter mount type was used to compress cork stoppers to seal various bottle sizes.
Japanning is the name applied to a type of finish that originated in Europe as an imitation of Asian lacquer work intended for use on furniture. It is not a product of Japan, nor is it comprised of the same ingredients. The European finish was later used on cast iron to prevent rust.
