Beautifully decorated and intricately carved hardwood bride's dowry chest or damchiya. The front corners are carved with primitive horse head finials. It is extremely heavy with many ornate features and made from real solid wood including hand painted original ceramic glass inserts. A hinged door with catch gives access to the spacious cabinet, above this is another hinged storage area and at the top to the left is a secret sliding panel enclosing a cupboard space. Handcrafted in the early 1900's, a damchiya, also known as a dowry chest was commissioned by a family to be created to hold the prospective bride's embroideries and textile creations that she brought with her to the marriage.
Notes: Very good, some age appropriate wear to a few of the porcelan pieces
