Early History
Establishment: NAS Lakehurst was established in 1921 as a center for airship operations. Its location was chosen due to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the relatively flat terrain, which was ideal for airship operations.
World War I: During World War I, the site was used as a munitions testing facility known as the Lakehurst Proving Grounds.
The Golden Age of Airships
Airship Operations: NAS Lakehurst became the center of U.S. Navy airship operations, hosting various dirigibles, including the USS Shenandoah, USS Los Angeles, USS Akron, and USS Macon.
Hindenburg Disaster: The most infamous event in the history of NAS Lakehurst was the Hindenburg disaster on May 6, 1937. The German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire and was destroyed during its attempt to dock. This disaster marked the end of the airship era for passenger travel.
World War II and Beyond
World War II: During World War II, NAS Lakehurst played a significant role in anti-submarine warfare training, using blimps for coastal patrols.
Post-War Activities: After World War II, the base continued to support various aviation activities, including helicopter operations and testing of aircraft arresting gear.
