The Venetian Carnival is still a tradition today as the beautiful city of Venice serves as the gathering place for Venetians and other visitors from around the world to take part in this exceptional, hedonistic festival. An integral part of the Carnival was the commedia del’arte. Featuring a wide variety of colourful exaggerated characters, the commedia was also significant for the prolific use it made of masks. The traits of the stage characters could not be separated from the traits of the relevant mask.“
