BIOGRAPHY : Manuel Madruga Filho, landscape artist, portrait artist, impressionist painter and decorator, was born in the city of Magé, in his then 2nd district, Santo Antonio do Paquequer, present-day Teresópolis, on September 20, 1872, and died in Rio de Janeiro. , June 16, 1951. Studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, being a student of José Maria de Medeiros (1849-1925) and Zeferino da Costa (1840-1915). Now exhibiting at the National Salon of Fine Arts, he received an honorable mention in 1894 and a second-class gold medal in 1898, following that year to France, with the help of a relative, to attend the École des Paris in Paris. Beaux Arts and the Julian Academy, having been a disciple of Jean-Paul Laurens, Henri Rochefort and Marcel Baschet. In 1899, at the Postal House of Rio de Janeiro, he made a highly successful solo show, and with the money obtained from the sale of his paintings again went to France, now for a stay that would extend for several decades. Madruga joined in 1911 the team of artists in charge of the decoration of the Brazilian Pavilion at the Turin International Exhibition. He painted for the occasion a huge five by ten meter panel, "Brazil Offering the Products of Its Soil to the World," which was later purchased by the Ministry of Agriculture and then destroyed. He would return to Brazil only after World War II, having participated several times in the Salon des Artistes Français and having made some solo shows in Paris, including the Musée Carnavalet. Arriving in Rio de Janeiro in 1940, he won the competition for the decorations of the new building of the Ministry of War, with "The Cry of Ipiranga." From then until he died, he continued to participate in the Halls, obtaining, in the Paulista de Bellas Artes, the silver medal in 1940, and the gold medal - posthumously - in 1952. He also devoted himself to teaching. Founding member of the Brazilian Academy of Fine Arts. Awarded by the French Government the titles of Academy Officer (1910), Officer of l'Instruction Publique (1924) and Knight of the Order of the Legion of Honor (1936). According to Roberto Pontual's “Dictionary of Fine Arts in Brazil”, “his artistic production is very reminiscent of the environment in which he lived the longest: France. The overall tone of his paintings reflects the light of the northern countries, less intense than that of the tropics (...) His foreign formation in no way prevented his return to Brazil (...) to address national themes in landscapes and historical compositions. " His paintings can be seen at the Pinacoteca de São Paulo and at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro.
