John Uht (1924-2010)
Born in Dayton, Ohio in 1924, he studied Fine Art at the University of Illinois. After completing his studies, he moved to New York City where he ran a teaching studio in a house boat on the Harlem River.
He moved to England in 1960 and lived in Dorset.
Uht was a painter and sculptor, possibly best known for his watercolour studies of clowns and circus people. He also did figure, dancers and nude studies, as well as landscapes and portraits.
His work has been published in card form and is also available in limited edition prints.
He was a member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour and exhibited in galleries throughout the United Kingdom. He also exhibited in in the United States.
His sculpture was chosen for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition on numerous occasions and his work is represented in the Permanent Collection of the Academy.
In addition he has work in the collections of Hoegh Shipping Lines, Guinness Mahon & Co and the Rockefeller Collection.
