Biography from Gary Wallace Auctioneers
Calvin Jacob Libby- born June 22 1931 -died 1998- was one of nine children growing up on a farm in Stowe, Vermont. He went on to the University of Vermont, The New England School of Art in Boston and later to the Museum of Modern Art in Trier, Germany, where he studied while serving in the armed forces.
After the military, he landed a job as Art Director with an advertising agency in New York City. His wife, Ann grew up in Nashua, NH with her parents and her sister. She was also very involved in the arts and theatre. Cal and Ann met while they were both attending The New England School of Art. They lived in New York City for eight years and then decided to buy a house in Nashua to raise their two daughters.
After they moved to Nashua, NH, Calvin was commuting into Boston, working as the Art Director for Harold Cabot Advertising Agency. After 10 years of a long daily commute, Calvin and Ann decided that Calvin should pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a free-lance artist. It was the best decision they had ever made. Cal continued to paint and do silk screening but he also taught graphic design at White Pines College in NH and also at Rivier College in Nashua.
Calvin was commissioned to do a ninety-four foot long mural for the Manchester Child and Family Services in Manchester, NH. Ann Libby is herself an artist. For years, a patent designer but later in life she did enameling (firing of glass onto metal) of her artwork.
Calvin has won top prizes in The New Hampshire Art Association's Currier Show and their summer show at Mt. Sunapee and at The Annual New England Show of the Cape Cod Art Association. In 1976 Calvin Libby won The Copley Society of Boston's Robb Sagendorph Memorial Prize for his Red Geraniums, which was then purchased by The Indian Head National Bank in Hudson, NH. At one time, Calvin had his work in more than forty galleries across the United States.
