Vintage Sbarluzzi Pienza Ceramic Lemon Planter, Signed

"An entirely Italian story that began in the early 1930s when Ruggero Sbarluzzi , then a boy, working in a brick kiln discovered what would later be his passion and source of inspiration... clay, present in large quantities in our hills, appearing here and in the form of gullies. There is news of the production of terracotta materials in Pienza, already in the Renaissance era, in 1462, when Rossellino, favorite pupil of Leon Battista Alberti, after having transformed the then village of Corsignano into the marvelous city of Pienza at the behest of Pope Pius II , it is believed, used terracotta materials to floor the splendid buildings he built."
