The 19th-century Eastlake movement, initiated by British architect Charles Eastlake (1836–1906), aimed to reform architectural and household design. Nestled within the late Victorian period, it is intricately linked to the Queen Anne style. Eastlake advocated for handmade or meticulously crafted machine-produced furniture in his book, "Hints on Household Taste in Furniture, Upholstery, and Other Details." US manufacturers embraced his ideas, spawning mass-produced Eastlake Style/Cottage furniture. Characterized by geometric ornaments, spindles, and low relief carvings, these designs prioritized affordability and easy maintenance. While Eastlake didn't craft furniture himself, his influence reshaped American home interiors, emphasizing attractive, functional, and easily cleaned English-inspired designs. Contrasting with previous bulky and dust-collecting styles, Eastlake's movement championed aesthetics and craftsmanship.
