The history of the balangandan goes way back -- to the first Africans brought to Brazil, their heritage, beliefs, culture and religion.
Each balangandan was meant to bring good luck by evoking the protection of various African gods and goddesses, as well as saints of the Catholic. The symbolism attached to the hanging items are as varied as the pieces themselves.
As jewelry, small balangandans would be worn by women on their person or clothing, and larger versions were hung over the entrances of houses or laid on tables.
This one looks to have gourds, vegetables and fruit -- each of which has its own meaning -- and are in good to very good condition. The hanger itself - with the birds at top - is in nice shape, just missing one rivet on the right side where the bottom part attaches to the top (held by a small ring now.)
A couple of the hanging pieces have shallow dents, but everything else is good shape with just the typical wear to the silvering to some of the copper or brass.
Measures 6 5/8" wide and 12.5" from top of the hanger to the bottom of the hanging pieces.
Good with a few condition issues
