Fascinating book on the Cote D'Azur in what many would call its heyday, conjuring up the time when author Edith Wharton settled there at the end of WWI.
The area was then changing from the genteel winter resort of European aristocrats into the hot spot for the American jet set and other international stars. Among the hordes were Coco Chanel, the Duke & Duchess of Windsor, Ali Khan, Somerset Maugham, Jean Cocteau, Cole Porter, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Matisse, who all descended upon the palatial hotels, intoxicating casinos, and glamourous nightclubs, even sometimes entertaining in their richly appointed homes.
