c. 1940s nice oil on board of a gatehouse of an inn or estate at night by Finnish-American artist Helmi Collander (1891-1961.)
The work is in nice condition with almost no wear. Signed on the lower right "H. Collander."
Sight size is 19.5" by 13.5 and frame, I believe original, is 21.5 by 16.5"
Helmi Collander came to Ashtabula, Ohio in 1910 with her physician husband, who became Vice-Consul of Finland in the Midwest. She gave up painting to raise her children, then picked it back up in the 1930s. (Last photo shows Helmi with her daughter and husband in Ashtabula.)
During the 1930's Mrs. Collander studied at the William Eastman Institute in Cleveland and in 1932 had a one-woman show at the Grant Gallery in New York City with the critic Henry McBride praising her work.
Her paintings were also exhibited in Cleveland, Chicago, Narragansett, R.I., and at the Butler Institute in Youngstown, Ohio.
