This pen and ink silhouette was drawn by Earl Owen Foust (1884-1918) of Fostoria, Ohio. I don't know the reference to Searle's in the caption; it might have been a restaurant or nightclub in the area at the time -- the fellow looks like he's headed out for a night on the town.
Earl was a 22-year-old machinist at the Atlas Manufacturing Co. in Fostoria when he signed up for the draft on June 5, 1917. Sixteen months later, he was killed in action in France, on Oct. 6, 1918.
His drawing is in good condition with a little water staining at the bottom, not affecting the work itself, and overall, uniform toning from age.
The frame is in good shape except for one small piece of veneer missing on the lower left corner.
Frame is 12" by 8.5" and sight size is 7 5/8" by 4 1/8"
(Note: Earl's last name was erroneously written as "Faust" on the back -- at some point a number of Foust family members did change their name to that spelling, but Earl did not.)
Good with a few condition issues
