Monumental oil on canvas portrait of Anne de la Vigne, depicted as Calliope Muse de la Poesie, attributed to Louis Ferdinand Elle the Elder (French, 1612-1689), painted between 1660-1670 according to the purchase receipt from Jean Moust Antiques in Bruges, Belgium.
Anne de la Vigne was a famous French poet, who died in 1684. She is depicted with a laurel wreath around her arm, in the right bottom corner is an inscription "Calliope Muse de la Poesie".
From Jean Moust Antiques...
"The attribution to Louis Elle I is due to Sotheby's, London, where this painting had been auctioned in 1987. Looking at other (signed) portraits by Louis Elle the Elder the attribution seems absolutely right.
During the early years (1654 - 1670) of the long reign of Louis XIV (born in 1638, after the death of his father Louis XIII in 1643 Regency of his mother Anne d'Autriche, crowned in Reims in 1654, died in 1715) Louis Elle the Elder is considered the most important court painter (the others being Justus van Egmont, Charles and Henri Beaubrun and Jean Nocret)."
