The obverse reinterprets Myron’s Greek discus thrower along with the famous “Stars in Motion” logo of the 1984 Olympics. It also features the date of 1983, mintmark, and the inscription “LOS ANGELES XXIII OLYMPIAD LIBERTY.” The coin’s reverse depicts an American Bald Eagle.
STRUCK IN HIGHLY PURE SILVER – Each Olympic Discus Thrower Commemorative Silver Dollar was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 26.73 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver and measures 38.1 mm in diameter.
LEGAL-TENDER COIN – These 1983-Sated Olympic Discus Thrower Commemorative Silver Dollars are $1 legal tender in the United States.
LIMITED, ONE-YEAR-ONLY MINTAGE – The San Francisco Mint struck just 174,014 of these 1983-S Olympic Discus Thrower Commemorative Silver Dollar—nine times less than the Proof version also struck by the San Francisco Mint.
