1946 Bikini Island ATOMIC BOMB Test Original Press Photo

"BIKINI FIREWORKS--This remarkable photo shows the huge smoke column that closely followed the explosion of the first atom bomb at Bikini July 1, 1946. Island in the background is Bikini, long since evacuated of all natives and Joint Task Force personnel. This photo was made by a service photographer from an airplane flying as close to the scene of the explosion as safety permitted. A retoucher has carefully obliterated all trace of the target ships that showed in the original photograph.
